# What Is Schutzhund Training? IGP/IPO Explained > Schutzhund (now IGP/IPO) explained: the three phases, what titling proves about a dog and trainer, and why it matters when evaluating one. It originated as a working-suitability test for German Shepherds and remains the clearest public benchmark for a working dog's temperament and training. ## The three phases

IGP/Schutzhund has three phases scored in a single trial: tracking (following a scent trail and indicating articles), obedience (heeling, retrieves, and control exercises off leash), and the controlled-work phase (bite work with a decoy, including a release on command). A dog must pass all three in the same trial to earn the title.

## Why titling matters when evaluating a breeder or trainer A title earned in competition is judged by someone with no financial stake in the outcome, under a standard the breeder or trainer doesn't control. That is fundamentally different from a claim on a website. No. Titling is proof of tested ability, not a requirement for a stable, confident household dog. But a trainer or breeder whose own dogs carry real titles has demonstrated their methods work under conditions they can't manipulate.
